With the view of Arundel Castle seen from miles around, this is arguably what draws most people to the town. But what has brought me back to this picturesque West Sussex town more than once is the shopping that’s available. There is not a single high street store or chain in sight! Every shop is independently owned, offering unique items that you can’t find anywhere else. Below I’ve rounded up some of the best independent Arundel shops that you must check out if you’re visiting the area.
Arts and Antiques Shops in Arundel
No12 Antiques
This 17th century building feels like someone’s house that’s full of treasures. There’s lots of old features including exposed brick walls, wooden beams and a fireplace which makes it a joy to walk around. Outside there’s a (not so!) secret garden to explore too. I love that the shop is owned by a group of experienced antique dealers who each have their own eye for eclectic, vintage, antique and decorative finds.
Chris Tapsell Oriental Antiques
Walking through a pretty outside walkway filled with plants and statues leads into this deceptively big shop filled with antiques. Everything you can imagine is found here. Large pieces including tables, dressers, chairs and mirrors sit amongst smaller delicate items like clocks, ornaments and vases. One of the standout oriental pieces for me was a dark wooden display cabinet with stunning pearl detailing for over £13,000. A hidden gem of a shop!
Nineveh House
Nineveh House is a former church from the 1830s that has been converted into a unique shopping experience. With its dark wood and stained glass windows, its previous life can still be felt when you’re inside. With 50s music playing in the background, it definitely felt like I’d stepped off the street and back in time. There are various traders selling arts, crafts and antiques in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Arondelle
The perfect combination of shopping and food is available at Arondelle, which is part antique shop, part café. As per the website, they “are always on the lookout for exciting products that enhance and delight”. From dressers and cabinets, to candlesticks and statues, there’s plenty of options to pique your interest whilst you enjoy a hot beverage.
The Old Print Works
Converted into a gallery of several independent shops, the Old Print Works in Arundel gave me souk-like vibes with a very similar look and feel to the indoor markets in Dubai! I’m not sure if this was intentional, but it’s definitely a little photogenic gem slightly set back from the main street. Inside you’ll find shops selling antique and vintage items. These include Retroesque (vintage clothing), Isabella Josie (hats and fascinators), A Ray of Delight (vinyl records and CDs), and AJ’s Emporium (retro gifts and memorabilia).
Old Maps & Prints
This pretty façade leads into a shop that is perfect for artists and creatives. Although it may be small, it packs a punch in terms of all the maps, paintings, illustrations and etchings on offer. The online reviews for the shop all state how helpful and knowledgeable the owner is so if there’s any particular map location you’re looking for, he can likely help!
Spencer Swaffer Antiques
Based in Arundel for 40 years, Spencer set up his own museum at the age of 11 and evolved into an antiques dealer at the age of 12! By age 16 he had his own antiques store in Brighton. His incredible story can be read on his website, where you can also see some of the treasures available to buy from the shop.
Homeware and Gift Shops in Arundel
Pots and Posies
With its white timber ceiling and wooden beams, this homewares shop has a very rustic feel to it. Items for sale include soft furnishings, crockery, glassware, and accessories. As well as the shop displays, the owner puts her creativity to work by offering wedding and event styling, and property staging services.
Dinky Donkey Delights
A great place to find quirky gifts and preloved furniture which the owner has given a bit of TLC to. The business was started after “after seeing so much preloved furniture being thrown away for simply not being on trend anymore”. Expect lots of pet themed (especially dog) related items inside too! The owner has also recently opened a beautiful rental cottage should you wish to stay in Arundel, that showcases some of the items from the shop perfectly.
Parkers Atelier
Parker’s Atelier is a home decoration store, offering a curated mixture of items that are antique and contemporary. This type of shop runs in the owner’s blood, as her late mum owned an antiques shop in Southsea. The space is constantly evolving and the shop regularly collaborates with different artists and creators. Their work can often be found being promoted in the shop window.
Scent Lounge
This small but perfectly formed boutique is filled with luxury perfumes, candles and diffusers from around the world. The owners have over 20 years of experience working alongside top brands and exclusive stores. This means they are able to source and curate a brilliant selection of brands that you won’t find in any high street stores! Scent Lounge is perfect if you want to keep your home smelling as well as looking beautiful.
Twice as Nice
I love when shops ‘spill out’ onto the street and there’s displays of items that you can admire before going inside. This is what caught my eye and caused me to cross the road to check out Twice as Nice. It sells a mixture of homewares, gifts, antiques, and even taxidermy. It’s a bit more haphazard than some of the other shops but that almost makes it more fun trying to dig out the hidden gems!
Labour of Love Vintage
Whether you want fresh flowers for your home or a bouquet for a friend, this is the place to go. There’s plenty of choice and different items are available throughout the year such as Easter and Christmas wreaths, flower arrangements in jam jars, and flower making kits. The owner Jackie has a great eye for picking out unusual flowers and she can also be found selling flowers at the Arundel Farmer’s Market.

Fanny Adams
The Fanny Adams boutique is open seven days a week and is loved by visitors and locals alike. The owner Kim picks out the stock which is refreshed on a regular basis. You’ll find silk, cotton and linen in the summer months and wool, cashmere and faux fur in the winter months. With a long career in retail, Kim knows what her customers want and is very active on social media showcasing what’s new in store. I love how colour co-ordinated the shop is too!
Jo & Co
Jo & Co. is another boutique that is open seven days a week and has pieces you won’t find in a usual high street store. Think oversized jumpers, floaty dresses and lots of sparkle, for those wanting comfort as well as style!
Gray’s of Tarrant St
Next door is its sister company, Grays. A small but perfectly formed shoewear and accessories boutique. It features a range of footwear including boots (heeled and flat), trainers, and slippers. Accessories include bags, scarves, and socks. It’s nicely laid out with not too any items on display at any one time. Items regularly change and are seasonal too.
Food and Drink Shops in Arundel
The Tea And Biscuit Club
You can’t miss the super pretty Tea and Biscuit Club shop with its colourful plant-filled teapots outside. Inside you’ll find teapots for sale, alongside a wide range of loose leaf teas and biscuits. The owners have travelled to over 90 countries to seek inspiration for the tea blends available. If you or a loved one adore tea, you can sign up for their Tea Club, a subscription service where you’ll receive three blends a month for six months sent directly to your door.
Copper Pan Fudge Company
This place sells luxury handcrafted fudge with incredible flavours including Biscoff, Bailey’s Irish Cream, chilli chocolate, cherry bakewell, rhubarb, and lemon cheesecake. Sadly I can’t eat it as I don’t have dairy, but given that they won the award for “Best Confectionery” at The Great British Food Awards 2020 I can only imagine how amazing it tastes! Fudge was always on of my favourites and I’ve not quite found a dairy-free version that’s as good yet!

Arundel is a world-class destination for antiques and collectibles. Beyond that, it is famous for local Sussex produce (like hand-roasted coffee and craft beer), art from local galleries, unique homewares, and sweet treats.
The popular Arundel Farmers’ Market takes place on the third Saturday of every month from 9:00am to 1:00pm. It features everything from locally brewed ales to artisan cheeses and seasonal game.
Tarrant Street is the “main artery” for independent shopping with boutiques and specialised gift shops. For antiques, the High Street and Fitzalan Road (home to large antique warehouses) are your go-to locations.
Many independent shops and antique centres in Arundel do open on Sundays, typically from 11:00am to 4:00pm. However, some smaller boutiques may close or have shorter hours, so it’s a good idea to check online if there is a specific place you’re hoping to visit.
Arundel is better known for high-end antiques and boutiques but there are a couple of charity shops that often carry high-quality “donated treasures” due to the affluent nature of the local area.
