Why Visit Düden Waterfalls Antalya?

The Düden Waterfalls Antalya are a must-see destination for travellers looking to explore the natural beauty of Turkey. There are two cascading waterfalls – Upper Düden Waterfalls and Lower Düden Waterfalls.

These natural wonders are fed by the Düden River, which originates in the Taurus Mountains. The word “Düden” in Turkish historically referred to underground water springs or wells, a fitting name given the river flows almost entirely underground before it surfaces at the waterfalls.

According to Turkish folklore, the Düden River was thought to be a portal to the underworld due to its mysterious underground flow. Locals once believed that the river’s waters had magical properties. Both sets of falls are different and offer something unique to experience.

The Upper Düden Waterfalls (Yukarı Düden)

Located about 7.5 miles (12km) northeast of Antalya’s city centre, the Upper Düden Waterfalls are a serene escape. The falls are surrounded by greenery, so you can immerse yourself in nature. The mist and evaporation from the falls create a microclimate, making the area cooler and more humid than surrounding regions. I found this the perfect place to cool down a bit from the Turkish heat! This microclimate also supports unique flora and fauna that are less common elsewhere in Antalya.

There are plenty of scenic paths that lead to the falls, so lots of photo opportunities. One of the highlights of the Upper Düden Waterfalls is the unique cave behind the falls that you can walk through. It’s amazing to experience the cascade from a different perspective, and to stand behind the water curtain, listening to the powerful roar as it tumbles into the river below.

There are picnic spots and cafes around, so you can stop for food and drinks too, as well as gift shops on site.

The Lower Düden Waterfalls (Aşağı Düden)

While the Upper Düden Waterfalls offer a tranquil forest setting, the Lower Düden Waterfalls are far more dramatic. Located about 5 miles (8km) southeast of Antalya city center, these falls are where the Düden River meets the Mediterranean Sea.

The falls cascade from cliffs that are 131 feet high, pouring into the turquoise sea below. I’ve personally never seen anything like it! Out of the thousands of waterfalls in the world, only 31 flow directly into the sea, including this one.

You can view the Lower Düden Waterfalls from the coastline paths near Lara Beach. For a more immersive experience, take a boat tour that sails close to the base of the waterfall, giving you an up-close view of its power.

Interestingly, the Lower Düden Waterfalls create a unique point where freshwater from the river meets the saltwater of the sea. This rare ecosystem supports certain marine and freshwater species that have adapted to the mix of waters.

How to get to Düden Waterfalls Antalya

Getting to both the Upper and Lower Düden Waterfalls is fairly easy. We stayed in Side, and it was about an hour’s drive. We had hired a car, but you can also get a taxi from here. If you’re staying in Antalya, you’re already much closer.

The drive from Antalya city centre takes around 20 minutes and you can park on the street nearby. If you prefer public transportation, local buses heading towards Kepez or Varsak will get you close to the Upper Düden Waterfalls.

The Lower Düden Waterfalls are easily accessible by car or public transport as well. From the city centre, a taxi ride or bus will take around 15-20 minutes, just head towards Düden Park.

Do you have to pay to visit Düden Waterfalls?

There is a very small entrance fee for the Upper Waterfalls, typically around 50–70 Turkish Lira per person (£0.82 – £1.16 GBP). The Lower Waterfalls can be seen from Düden Park, which is free.

Can you swim in the Düden Waterfalls?

No, swimming is strictly prohibited at both the Upper and Lower Falls for safety and conservation reasons. However, you can take a boat trip from Antalya’s Old Harbour to see the Lower Falls closer up.

When is the best time to visit Düden Waterfalls?

The Düden Waterfalls can be visited year-round, but spring and early summer (April to June) are considered the best times to visit. This is because of the pleasant weather (not too hot) and lush surroundings, due to recent rainfall. The greenery around the falls is vibrant, and the water flow is often at its strongest during this period. If you want to avoid the peak tourist season, plan your visit during late autumn. In terms of the time of day, if you’re able to visit early morning, you’re likely to have less crowds to contend with.

How much time do I need at Düden Waterfalls?

Budget about 1 to 1.5 hours for each location. If you plan to have a meal at the restaurants near the Upper Falls, allow for 2.5 hours.
